Dennis mentioned in one of his posts that the last night in London we split into two groups to take in two very different shows. Joshua, Anna & I went to see the musical interpretation of the movie Ghost. I never saw the movie when it came out, which was probably a good thing, this way there was no need for 'spoiler alerts'. It had an interesting, if somewhat far-fetched, plot line but was very well done. The singing and dancing was excellent, we found out later when Joshua bought a program that the lead character parts were both played by the understudies, they did very well.
The thing that really fascinated me was the staging. There were three conveyor-type belts that ran the entire length of the stage; when they were in their apartment, a chaise lounge, side table and fridge rolled in from the side of the stage and backdrops for the walls, door, etc. came down from the ceiling. This conveyor belt was particularly effective for the street scenes which involved a lot of walking - you can walk for a long time on those belts and go nowhere. The show also made extensive use of projections to help fill in the plot gaps. All in all it was a very enjoyable experience and I would certainly recommend it for the staging as well as the great music.
After the show we met up again outside St. James' Tavern. The plan had been to meet inside but we were there first and the pub was so crowded, we opted to stay outside under the shelter of a roof by the souvenir shop. We did some people watching while we waited and let me tell you, there was lots to see.
Dennis & Thomas stopped on their way over to pick up an umbrella, they were looking at some t-shirts and the owner assured them he would give them a good deal if we all came back (hmm, almost sounds like the witch in Narnia - bring your family back). Anyway, we all went back (nothing bad happened) and we bought a set of matching shirts. We didn't get as good a price as what they were at the souvenir shop where we had been earlier but none of us were quick enough with our math to figure that out. He also threw in a free Queen's Jubilee shopping bag for me - how do you argue with that?
To speed up the getting home process, we asked him for directions to the subway, it turned out we were very close - just go to the end of the block, turn right and there it would be. Lesson learned about watching what you ask for - we followed his directions, turned the corner and burst out laughing - there it was - the Subway sandwich chain, should have asked for the Tube. Oh well, it was a light moment and one we're still laughing about.
i liked the movie Ghost; Demi Moore was in the early stages of her career then.
ReplyDeleteI actually laughed out loud when I read about the Subway thing. I guess to them it`s the tube and nothing else.
